Lincolnshire Automobile Club

Annual Report of the Committee 1919

         Back

The committee have pleasure in presenting the Annual report and balance Sheet.

It will be seen that the active membership has risen from 140 in 1918 to 210 in 1919, and judging by the applications for particulars of membership, there is every prospect of the club rising to its old standing as regards numbers.

At the Annual General meeting held on April 16th, 1919 , Sir Hickman Bacon, Bart., was unanimously elected President, and the Vice Presidents were also re appointed; the committee, with the addition of Mr J.C. Harrop and Mr A.E.Brunning, were also re-elected; also the Hon. Solicitor, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Secretary, and Auditor, Messrs. A.A. Padley, A.E. Simpson, and T.C. Ives and J.S. Streets.

The committee have had before them for consideration a number of applications for speed limits, but by judiciously placing before the various Councils the advantages of taking up action under the powers already existing for the prevention of driving to the danger of the public they have got the projects shelved, the City of Lincoln being a case in point. The efficacy of such action appears to have been proved as there have since been but few cases of reckless driving.

Since the last Annual General meeting a circular has been sent round to all members pointing out that as the proprietors of the Autocar were unable to continue the concession to the club and would in future have to charge the full figure, it had become necessary to substitute another periodical, and the choice fell upon the Automotor, which although not so bulky a paper as the Autocar, yet containing a great many features which are so interesting to the owner-driver, and consequently appeals even more directly to the members of this club.

The Associate Scheme of the Royal Automobile Club has again proved its value, many members having availed themselves of the opportunity of getting to their destination at no expense to themselves when a mishap has occurred to their car. Legal matters have been defended free of cost in all those cases where it was considered justified to defend.

The present payment to the Royal Automobile Club is 7s. 6d per annum for each fully paid member, but an informal intimation has been given that it will be necessary to increase this to 15s as the donation per member from each Associated club. As this amount would only leave 6s to cover the issue of a motor paper to each member and other expenses, it would obviously be insufficient, and the committee are consequently giving serious consideration to the subject.

Now that matters are settling into a Peace basis again, the committee feel that additional advantages should be obtained by the members, and to this end arrangements are being entered into to provide free garage, etc., at the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society’s show, at Grimsby , on July 14th, 15th and 16th. Full particulars will be sent out in due course.

The attention of members who contemplate touring is drawn to the excellent routes sent out by the touring Bureau of the R.A.C, to which all members of this club are entitled. They are very complete, and will be found of considerable advantage when planning an extended run.

At the end of last year the balance was £245 15s 7d. which has increased, despite the heavy cost of the weekly journal, to £258 2s 11d, of which £150 is invested in5% War loan.
