Lincolnshire Automobile Club

Annual Report of the Committee 1913

            Back

The committee in presenting their Annual Report, have pleasure in stating that the work of the club has proceeded with uninterrupted success during the year. Since the last Annual Meeting, 63 new members have been elected and the membership is 322.

At the Annual General Meeting held on January 17th 1913 , Sir H.B. Bacon, Bart., was re-elected President and the Vice-Presidents were also elected with the addition of Mr. W.Embleton Fox, Chairman of the Lindsey County Council. The Committee was re-appointed, as also were the Hon. Solicitor, Hon. Secretary, Hon Treasure and Auditor Messrs. A.A.Padley, Godfry Lowe, E.R. Simpson and J.S. Streets.

A useful discussion took place on the subject of the state of the roads in the eastern part of the County.

The relations of the club with the Royal Automobile Club continue to be of the most harmonious nature. The Royal A.C however have given formal notice to the club to terminate its agreement, the Committee has very carefully considered a draft agreement which has been submitted by the Royal A.C. The giving of the notice was entirely due to the fact that for the past two years the amount contributed by the Associated Clubs has not sufficed to cover the cost of the services rendered by the Royal A.C. to the Associated Clubs, and it has been therefore found necessary to vary the agreement in the matter of capitation fee to be paid by the clubs.

The amount now asked is 7/6 per member instead of the old figure of 5/-. Members will be aware that for the past two years this club has made a voluntary payment of 2/- per member in addition to the capitation fee of 5/-, so that the amount now asked for is only an additional 6d.

The Committee recommend the members to agree to this, feeling sure that in the present prosperous condition of the club this amount can easily afforded and that the advantages offered by the Royal A.C. to its Associates are well worth the additional outlay.

The Road guide scheme of the Royal A.C. has been slightly extended during the year, and for the last few months a man has been on duty in the neighbourhood of Lincoln and in view of the agitation for a speed limit in the city, he has done useful work on street duty on busy days.

As stated in the last Annual Report, the Kesteven County Council applied for a speed limit at Syston near Grantham. As a result of a friendly conference held on the spot between representatives of the Royal A.C., the Automobile Association, this club and the council a compromise was arrived at and the limit was granted over a portion of the distance asked for.

No other speed limits have been applied for in the County during the year. A new form of danger sign has been adopted in conjunction with the Royal A.C. and two will shortly be erected at Alford. Other signs will also be erected at Laceby and at Tickler’s Corner , near Grimsby . Signs have also been erected by the County Councils on the recommendation of the Committee.

A large and increasing number of members have availed themselves of the free legal and touring information provided by the Royal A.C. and free legal defence has been provided for certain members who have been involved in Police Court Proceedings.
